Abstract
Introduction:Patients with substance use disorder often face various psychological challenges such as anxiety and decreased motivation to continue treatment, which can lead to poor treatment adherence and an increased risk of relapse. Nurses, as key members of the treatment team, play an important role in providing psychological education and crisis management interventions that can improve treatment outcomes. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of nursing education based on crisis management on reducing anxiety and increasing treatment motivation in patients admitted to addiction treatment centers. Methods and Materials:This semi-experimental study with a pretest-posttest control group design was conducted in 2025 at the Baharan Addiction Treatment Center in Zahedan. The sample consisted of 50 hospitalized patients undergoing addiction treatment, selected by convenience sampling and randomly assigned to intervention (n=25) and control (n=25) groups. The intervention group received six 90-minute educational sessions focusing on stress management techniques, coping with cravings, training coping skills, and enhancing motivation to continue treatment, provided by experienced nurses. The control group received only routine care. Data were collected before the intervention and one month afterward using the Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI) to assess anxiety and the Treatment Motivation Questionnaire. Statistical analysis included paired t-test, independent t-test, and repeated measures ANOVA using SPSS software with a significance level of p0.05. Results:The nursing education based on crisis management significantly reduced the mean anxiety scores in the intervention group (p0.05) and notably increased treatment motivation (p0.05). No significant changes were observed in the control group. These findings indicate the positive effect of nursing educational interventions on improving psychological status and increasing treatment willingness in addiction patients. Conclusion and discussion:Nursing education based on crisis management is an effective intervention for reducing anxiety and increasing treatment motivation in patients with substance use disorder. Integrating such education into the care programs of addiction treatment centers can improve service quality and treatment success. It is recommended that crisis management skills training be systematically expanded at the nursing level in this field.
